Understanding Adenomyosis

By Dr. Daniela Steyn, MD – Medical Doctor & Hormonal Health Expert

ree

Adenomyosis is a condition where the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows into the muscle wall of the uterus (the myometrium). This can make the uterus larger, heavier, and more tender than normal. Many women with adenomyosis experience heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, pelvic pressure, or discomfort during intimacy. Some women, however, have no symptoms and only discover it during an ultrasound or MRI.

Why Does It Happen?

The exact cause is not fully understood. Research suggests that hormonal changes, inflammation, and uterine injury (such as after childbirth or surgery) may play a role. Adenomyosis is more common in women in their 30s and 40s, especially those who have had children.

Conventional Treatment Options

Treatment depends on your symptoms, age, and family planning goals:

  • Medications: Hormone therapies, such as oral contraceptives, progestins, or IUDs, can help control heavy bleeding and painful periods.

  • Pain relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can ease menstrual cramps.

  • Procedures: For severe cases, options like uterine artery embolization or surgery may be considered. Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) is a definitive treatment, but only suitable for women who no longer wish to have children.

Integrative & Lifestyle Medicine Approaches

While medical treatments can be effective, many women find additional relief through lifestyle and natural approaches. These help reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and improve overall well-being.

1. Nutrition for Hormonal Balance

  • Focus on an anti-inflammatory diet: colorful vegetables, leafy greens, berries, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds.

  • Reduce intake of processed foods, sugar, and refined carbohydrates.

  • Support liver health with cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale), which help metabolize estrogen more effectively.

2. Stress Management & Mind-Body Medicine

Chronic stress can disrupt hormonal balance. Practices such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or journaling can reduce cortisol and improve menstrual health.

3. Regular Physical Activity

Gentle movement such as walking, Pilates, or swimming helps reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support mood.

4. Supplements & Herbal Support

Evidence-based supplements with anti-inflammatory or hormone-balancing effects include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (fish or algae oil)

  • Magnesium

  • Vitamin D

  • Curcumin (turmeric)

  • Green tea extract (EGCG)

  • Ginger

  • Ashwagandha

  • Resveratrol

5. Acupuncture & Integrative Therapies

Some women experience pain relief and better cycle regulation with acupuncture, massage therapy, or other complementary practices.
